Jason’s Top 15 Most Anticipated Films of 2016

Hey, everyone! The year of 2015 is quickly winding down as we all are getting ready to celebrate and ring in the new year. For those keeping track, 2015 saw a lot of movie release, with some that were box-office success, some that flopped big time, and some that were just mediocre. As I begin to add my “Editorials” (a new section to Jason’s Movie Blog), I will post my personal “Best” and “Worst” lists of 2015 movies in the coming weeks.
Moving on, the start of 2016 is about to begin and this year looks to be a very promising for movies, ranging from different categories and genres. Now, on the twilight eve of 2015, here’s a look at my top fifteen most anticipated movies of 2016.
15: The Divergent Series: Allegiant
Release Date: March 18th, 2016
Trailer: The Divergent Series: Allegiant Theatrical Trailer
Another teen dystopian movie, another part two finale endeavor. At least, the movie shows promise with a more expanded movie world and better visual effects. Just hope it’s better than Insurgent.
14: Alice Through the Looking Glass
Release Date: May 27th, 2016
Trailer: Alice Through the Looking Glass Teaser Trailer
This intended sequel to the Tim Burton’s 2010 Alice in Wonderland looks to carry the same bravado and fantasy zaniness from its predecessor. Definitely want to go back down the rabbit hole in 2016.
13: Warcraft
Release Date: June 10th, 2016
Trailer: Warcraft Trailer
A fantasy visual feast for the eyes. Fans of WOW or the older Warcraft PC games (myself) are most likely getting ready to watch the Alliance or Horde armies clash again in this live-action / CG 2016 movie this summer.
12: Bourne 5
Release Date: July 16th, 2016
Trailer: N/A
Simple known as Bourne 5 or Untiled Bourne Fifth Film sees the return of Matt Damon’s Jason Bourne to the silver screen for another action-packed movie. No official synopsis or trailer has been released…. yet.
11: Jungle Book
Release Date: April 15th, 2016
Trailer: The Jungle Book Teaser Trailer
As Disney continues to cycle through its animated movies to turn into live-action adaptations, I am curious to see how The Jungle Book turns out. Loved the animated movie when I was a kid and the trailer for this new movie looks impress. Can’t wait to hear Idris Elba’s voice as Shere Khan or Christopher Walken as King Louie.
10: Zootopia
Release Date: March 4th, 2016
Trailer: Zootopia Theatrical Trailer
With the new trailer just recently coming out, the movie’s story is presented as viewers get a better understand of this animal world. Like I said before, the animation looks solid and the voice talents look great. Can’t wait to see this movie in 2016 and maybe a potential sequel in the future.
9: Hail, Caesar!
Release Date: February 5th, 2016
Trailer: Caesar Trailer
The movie looks pretty funny and has an amazing cast of A-list Hollywood actors (Brolin, Fiennes, Swinton, Hill, Tatum, Clooney, etc.). I also like how its set during Hollywood’s golden age. Plus, its being directed by the Coen Brothers.
8: Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice
Release Date: March 25th, 2016
Trailer: Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice Trailer
While I’m a Marvel fanboy at heart, I do like a couple of DC comics. I am interested in seeing this movie, but I’m not completely “geeking” out about it. Could be Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne / Batman or Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor or how the trailers have given most of the movie away. Who knows? Regardless, I will definitely be seeing Dawning of Justice when it gets released and I’m hoping that the film exceeds my expectations.
7: Independence Day: Resurgence
Release Date: June 24th, 2016
Trailer: Independence Day: Resurgence Teaser Trailer
It’s been twenty years since 1996’s Independence Day came out and, while there has been always talk of an intended sequel, its taking that long (literally) to make a follow-up feature film. The trailer for Independence Day: Resurgence looks good and I like how some of the actors have come back to reprise their roles again (except for Will Smith). Looking forward to seeing this second alien invasion.
6: X-Men: Apocalypse
Release Date: May 27th, 2016
Trailer: X-Men: Apocalypse Teaser Trailer
Considered to be the last installment with McAvoy, Fassbender, Hoult, and Lawrence, X-Men: Apocalypse looks to end this intended trilogy (First Class, Days of Future Past, and Apocalypse). I’ve always been a fan of the X-Men movies, so I naturally uber excited to see this movie. I like additions of Olivia Munn’s Pyslocke, Sophie Turner’s Jean Grey, and, of course, the return Evan Peter’s Quicksilver. Also, Bryan Singer is directing the movie (so you know it’s going to be good).
5: Fantastic Beast and Where to Find Them
Release Date: November 18th, 2016
Trailer: Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them Teaser Trailer
I absolutely love the Harry Potter movies. Thus, I after hearing the news of spin-off movie that take places in the same Wizarding World (many years before the events of Harry Potter), I really am excited to see Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Plus, you got Eddie Redmayne as the main character. I sincerely hope that this movie lives up to the illustrious 8 Harry Potter films. Can’t wait for the next trailer to come out.
4: Deadpool
Release Date: February 12th, 2016
Trailer: Deadpool Trailer
While I wasn’t into all the “hype” for the comic book character at first, after watching the trailer for the movie…I am now. It looks absolutely hilarious. I’m very curious to see how this movie will be received by fans and critics and to see if Marvel / Disney will acquire the rights from 20th Century Fox in order to bring Deadpool into their MCU.
3: Dr. Strange
Release Date: November 4th, 2016
Trailer: N/A
As the second movie in the MCU’s Phase III saga, Dr. Strange will definitely bring a new mystical element to this cinematic universe. With a “strange” new character to introduce and an interesting cast of actors (Benedict Cumberbatch, Rachel McAdams, Tilda Swinton, and Chiwetel Ejiofor), Dr. Strange has the promise of being entertaining as well as being refreshing. Bring on, Steven Strange and his “Eye of Agamotto”.
2: Star Wars: Rogue One
Release Date: December 16th, 2016
Trailer: N/A
With all the hype and praise from Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the “Star Wars” fever has returned to mainstream pop culture. Star Wars: Rogue One (the film franchise’s first spin-off feature) tells the story of a wayward band of Rebel fighters that come together to carry out a desperate mission: to steal the plans for the Death Star before it can be used to enforce the Emperor’s rule. While it’s not Episode VIII, I’m still highly intrigue to see this movie and to see how it will be received.
1: Captain America: Civil War
Release Date: May 6th, 2016
Trailer: Captain America: Civil War Teaser Trailer
As I said, I’m a Marvel fanboy at heart and I completely ecstatic to see Captain America: Civil War. I’ve seeing the trailer dozens of times and still am amazed by it. It’s going to be a monster of a movie that has most of “Avengers” in it (minus Thor and Hulk) plus new characters as well. With the all rumors of who’s going to die at the end of the movie, I am very eager to see the Civil War when it comes out. The MCU’s Phase III saga is definitely going to begin with a colossal and surefire “BANG”.
I pretty sure that I forgot I a couple of movies (sorry, guys), but I couldn’t fit them onto this list. What do you guys think? What other 2016 movies are you guys excited about? Let me know.
Great Job. So much information! Marlene and Justin
Cannot wait to see Hateful Eight this Monday!
