Game of Thrones: The IMAX Experience Mini-Review (Plus Season 5 Trailer)
GAME OF THRONES COMES ALIVE ON IMAX
In case you’ve been living under a rock, HBO’s Game of Thrones has proven to be a powerhouse juggernaut on television. Adapted from George R.R. Martin’s fantasy book series A Song of Fire & Ice, this series has gained an overwhelm support from fans and critics alike, alluring its viewers into the world of Westeros, a land of political intrigue and fantasy nuances. With its popularity growing and the anticipation swelling for the upcoming GoT’s season (season 5), HBO has partnered with IMAX theaters to bring the television series to the big screen, rendering the final two episode of season 4 in IMAX quality and premiering the trailer for next season. The result is glorious.
The episodes shown during this special IMAX screening are season 4’s episode 9 (The Watchers on the Wall) and episode 10 (The Children). For me, a huge Game of Thrones nerd and love of all things fantasy, it was incredible experience in watching these two episodes come alive on-screen. While the story’s narrative doesn’t change in its transition from the small to big screen, its cinematic nuances are heightened, bringing the crystal clear imagery and blasting sounds of an IMAX presentation to a viewer’s attention. Hearing Ramin Djawadi’s opening theme song playing or seeing the various battles fought at Castle Black are appealing to the senses and are completely fascinating to behold. “It’s a completely different viewing experience” says D.B Weiss, one of the two creators of the shows, and I couldn’t agree more. It honestly felt like I was watching a Hollywood blockbuster movie, not two episodes from a TV series.
Immediately following the two episodes was the first trailer for season 5. Having beings leaked online early, HBO decided to release the trailer online. View trailer below.
I do say that the trailer looks epic and felt epic in the IMAX theaters. Bring on season 5!
FINAL THOUGHTS
Is it worth seeing? It depends on your love of the show. While both casual fans of TV series and average moviegoers might not splurge to buy an IMAX price ticket, true diehard fans will thoroughly enjoyed this special Game of Thrones IMAX engagement. To me, it was definitely worth the price of admission and heightened my excitement for the show’s next season and beyond. If you have the time and near a theater that has an IMAX screen, check it out (It’s only here for one week only).
